Invitation Wizard - A special wizard
for inviting friends and associates to
join ICQ.
Advanced Features - Once you
have mastered Simple Mode you
can switch to Advanced Features
mode.
Add/Change Current user - Add or
Change the user on this specific ICQ
Client. (Up to Seven people can
register their own number on the
same computer).
Security & Privacy - ICQ offers
many security and privacy features so
that users can enjoy the level of
security they desire.
Preferences - ICQ comes with an
array of tabs so you can configure
ICQ to work according to your needs.
Help - ICQ comes with a special
online help file within the program
Sleep Mode - Close ICQ without
shutting down the program. ICQ will
wait in this mode until you connect to
the Internet again.
Shut Down - Shut down ICQ
completely.
Registering ICQ
When the installation process is complete, ICQ will automatically launch the
Registration Wizard.
If this is the first time you're installing ICQ on your computer, select "New User".
If you already have ICQ installed and are a registered user, select "Existing User".
Follow the online registration instructions. If you need any assistance, please refer
to the ICQ technical support page, or view and follow the Registration
Troubleshooting page.
When you first open the ICQ program after installation, the program appears in
Simple Mode (by default).
As you can see in figure 1, the ICQ client shows the following:
Your ICQ# - On the title bar of the ICQ
window there is a number. This is your
ICQ#
Instructions Button - brings you to this
page.
To Advanced Mode - prompts you to
switch to Advanced Features Mode, for
which we have created a different guide.
Find Random Chat Partner - enables you
to look for a random chat partner on a
subject by choice.
Add Users - enables you to search for
users on the ICQ Networks.
System Menu - contains sections we will
talk about in the next few pages.
Availability (Online/Offline)- also known
as the Status Menu, enables you to
connect or disconnect to and from the ICQ
servers.
When you wish to begin sending events to another ICQ user, clicking on the
selected
user will prompt you to choose which button to use for ICQ's Event Menu.
Select which mouse

The Event Menu
Message - Send an outgoing message.
Web Page Address (URL) - Send a page
you're viewing on the Internet
ICQ Chat - Send an online chat request to
the user you selected
Info - View a user's information and details
Rename - Select this option to rename a
user to your choice. Type in the name you
want to be seen and press the Enter key.
Delete - This option will delete the user you
selected from your Contact List
Advanced Features - Once you have
mastered Simple Mode you can switch to
Advanced Features mode.
Note : When any incoming event takes place, you will here a corresponding sound, and an icon will blink
next to the user who sent you the event. To receive the event, either double click on it, or click once on
the user and select receive
Sending a Message
Double clicking on a user name will launch a Send Online Message dialog to this
user. Alternatively, clicking on the user name and selecting Message will present the
same dialog.
Type your message in the dialog. Note that there is no limit to the amount of text you
can send to ICQ99a Online users. If the user is offline or is using an older version of
ICQ, you will be prompted to send the message to the user's Email address.
While you type your message you will hear the typing machine sounds. If you wish to
disable this option, click on the Sound icon button next to the character count.
You have the option to set the font, font colors and background color of your
messages.
Click on the More button to send your message to multiple users.
Finally, to send the message click on the Send button. Alternatively, use the
<CTRL>+Enter if you want to use your keyboard rather than the mouse.
Sending a Web Page Address (URL)
1.Click on a user on your list to open the Event Menu.
2.Select Web Page Address (URL).
The current address your browser is opened at will automatically be added.
You may change the URL to a previous location by clicking the arrow for the
drop down menu.
Click the More button to send to multiple users. To send the message, click on
the Send button or use the keyboard (<CTRL>+Enter).
Sending a Chat Request
1.Click on a user name and select ICQ Chat
2.Enter a chat reason in the dialog box (optional).
3.Click the Send button.
Note that the Join Session button is not available. This is because you are the one
sending the request. If you already have an open ICQ Chat session with a user,
sending the chat request to another user will enable you to click on this button, or if
the receiver of your request is currently in a chat, the receiver will be able to join you to
the open session on his/her computer.
The System Menu
Clicking on the System Menu will open the following options:
Invitation to Join ICQ - Send an invitation to friends and associates to
join ICQ.
Send My ICQ Four Addresses - Notify other users of the Four different
ways you can be contacted on ICQ.
View My Communication Center - View your own personal web enabled
ICQ Communication Center.
ICQ Homepage - Takes you to the ICQ Web site, home of ICQ.
What's New in ICQ - See what's new on our Web site.
Message Boards - The ICQ 2 Way Message Boards.
ICQ Network Status - View the ICQ Network Status if you encounter
problems connecting to ICQ.
Advanced Features.
The Main ICQ Menu
Clicking on the ICQ button will open the Main ICQ Menu. The ICQ
button is located next to the Status Menu. Following are your
options:

The Invitation Wizard
Search for your friends and contacts on the ICQ Network. Check if they are members
of the ICQ community, invite them to join if they're not and add them to your future
users watch. The ICQ service will inform you when they join the ICQ Network.
Search address books on my computer
Click on this button to search your computer's Address Books. This search will look
into your address books no matter what Email client you use, and the Windows
Address Book as well. Each and every contact the search will find will show on the
result window.
Mark the users you want to invite. You can add a personal message to the users
you're inviting by clicking on the corresponding button. You can also preview the
message your friends will receive. The invitation is sent by Email, according to the
default Email address as specified in your address books.
Invite a Specific Friend
Using this option you will be able to skip the search and enter a specific Email
address to send the invitation to.
You can enter a personalized note here as well, and preview the message before it is
sent.
Search in other Email directories
This will launch A built in search on other Email directories. If you don't know your
friend's Email address, search for it using your friend's name.
Select on which Directory Service to look in, enter your friend's name and click on the
Start Search button.
If you know your friend is registered in a directory service but it is not listed on our list,
click on the Add button, and enter the information for it in the corresponding fields.
