Netscape Email Basics

There are two ways you can open your Email window within Netscape.

                                                                                 Ý

The Inbox icon on the component bar notifies you when you have new messages.  Netscape Messenger checks your server periodically using the settings in the Mail Servers Preferences panel. After Messenger finds new messages, the Inbox icon displays a green arrow. A yellow arrow indicates that Messenger has not checked for messages yet (generally when you first launch Communicator).  New mail is also indicated on the Windows task bar in the lower right corner by displaying an envelope icon.

If you have not set your Netscape preferences to remember your Email password, you will need to enter that password before you will be able to send or receive Email messages.

Text Box: Remember that you will not be able to see your password. As you type it the box will fill with asterisks (*).

Messenger automatically downloads new messages to your Inbox if you've set it to check for messages at timed intervals, but you can retrieve them manually at any time.

To get new messages, do one of the following:

·         Click Get Msg on the Messenger window toolbar.

·         Choose Get New Messages from the File menu of the Messenger window.

·         Click the Inbox icon on the component bar.

The Message List Window will list all messages in your Inbox with an envelope showing to the left of the subject.  New messages will display in bold print.  Each message in the message list will include the title or subject of the Email if one was included, the name of the party where the Email is from, and the date and time the Email arrived in the Inbox.

To sort messages by subject, sender, date, or priority, click the appropriate label (column heading) in the Message List Window.  To sort messages in ascending or descending order, from the View menu, choose Sort and then select Ascending or Descending.

If you want to open the message in a view window, double-click on the message title in the Message List Window.  A new window will open as shown here.

To print a displayed message, click Print. Or from any of the windows, open the File menu and choose Print.

When you are finished viewing the message you can close it by clicking on the “Close” button (the button with the “X” in the upper right corner of the window).

The following Message Composition Window will display.

You have three options when addressing the Email message:

·         To       Primary recipients of your message.

·         CC      Carbon copy, for secondary recipients.

·         BCC   Blind carbon copy, for secondary recipients not identified to the other recipients, including those in the cc list.

Enter the Email address(es) of the recipient(s) of your message.  Be sure you enter the address correctly.  All Email addresses are comprised of an Email name followed by the @ symbol, and then the host name of the Email server.  For example, info@syringa.net  is an Email address, where info is the Email name, and syringa.net is the host name of the Email server.

It is a good idea to enter a subject for the message, but keep it short and simple.  Then in the message text area type your complete Email message.  The example on the next page shows a completed Email message.

Sometimes you will want to reply to a message that you receive.  This is convenient because the sender’s Email address will be automatically entered into the To area for you.  It also lets the person you are replying to see their original text so they can keep track of what your response relates to.

This will open a Reply Message window.

This will close the composition window and send the message to the recipient.

This will open a Forward Message Composition window, as shown below.
